The answers to today’s Quordle, game #397, are…
Today’s Quordle was difficult, despite – for the second day in a row – three answers starting with C. That’s because a few of those words (CONIC and CANNY) were also a bit fuzzy and contained repeated letters. , and another answer, OMEGA, but a difficult word altogether. I managed to solve it with one guess, but for a while it was very much in the balance.

Quordle FAQ: Everything you need
What is Quordle?
When Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And instead of completing them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.
It is played online through the Quordle website (opens in a new tab) and you can also find it through the Merriam-Webster site (opens in a new tab)after buying the dictionary Quordle last year.
As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player every day, which means you’re competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a new challenge every day.
There’s also a practice mode on the website – which I definitely recommend using before attempting the actual game! – and there are daily statistics including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements – special badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing enough times, or guessing hard words.
Oh, and it’s hard. Very difficult.
What are the rules of Quordle?
Quordle rules are almost identical to Wordle rules.
1. Turn green on the letters in the answer and in the correct place.
2. Letters in the answer but in the wrong place are turned yellow.
3. Letters not in the answer turn grey…
4. …BUT the word, you think, appears in all squares of the puzzle at the same time, so A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the last two.
5. Answers are never duplicated.
6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your view includes two of the same letter, they may both turn yellow, both may turn green, or one may be yellow and the other green.
7. Each guess must be a valid word in the Quordle dictionary. You cannot measure ABCDE, for example.
8. You don’t have to include correct letters in the subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent to Wordle’s Hard mode.
9. You have nine guesses to get Quordle’s answers.
10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your time zone.
What is a good Quordle strategy?
Quordle must be approached differently from Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can’t just blindly throw letters at it and expect to win – you’ll have a much better chance if you think strategically.
That’s the case in Wordle too, of course, but it’s even more important in Quordle.
There are two main things to remember.
1. Use some introductory words
First of all, you will only need one opening word, but almost certainly two or three opening words.
The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starters, as the same things that do well will apply here as well. But after that, you should choose another word or two that uses many more of the most common consonants and includes any remaining vowels.
For example, I currently use Stare > DOILY > Punch. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters of the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options – you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe – but something like that should do the trick.
If it goes well, that will give you a good indication of what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, good luck!
2. Things slim down
Secondly, if you are faced with a word where the answer could easily be one of many options – for example -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CatCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH – you definitely want to guess a word that narrows down those options.
In Wordle, you can try several of those in a row and hope you’re right, assuming you’ve left enough guesses. It’s risky, but it will work sometimes. Plus, it is the only option in hard mode. But in Quordle, this is bound to fail – you’re not guessing enough.
In the case above, CLAMP would be a big guess, as it could indicate the route to four of the seven words in one go.
