Being stuck at home during the pandemic taught us a few lessons. One is that you can do a lot at home, especially in your backyard! It certainly made us realize that we shouldn’t underestimate our backyards, they can be places of fun, recreation and relaxation…depending on how we set them up. You can turn your backyard into a perfect date spot for you and your partner, or host a barbecue party with the best grill on the market. We’ve curated a collection of product designs to help you bring these exciting ideas to life. These products will turn your yard into the ultimate relaxation destination. We promise you won’t want to leave your yard, once you introduce it to these products. From a tiny, modular table grill that makes outdoor cooking fun to outdoor furniture that’s made from recycled plastic, but feels and looks like wood – these designs will make a big difference in your humble backyard.
1. The Modular Grill + Base
When people think of outdoor cooking, they often assume it’s grills, mainly because it’s the most common type of cooking that you can’t conveniently do indoors. Of course, that’s probably not the only type of food you want to eat, but other styles of cooking would require different cookware and, therefore, more space. The +Base modular griller, however, supports almost any type of cooking you need, from frying (teppanyaki), smoking, stewing, grilling, or even keeping wine warm.
Why is it significant?
Made by a small family-run Japanese factory that specializes in sheet metal manufacturing, the All-in-One Grill has been carefully designed to maximize the limited amount of space available, such as small grooves on the grill frame that keep the skewers in place . The wooden base that protects tables from the hot bottom of the grill also serves as a cover when the griller needs to be stowed away.
What we like
- Let’s cook in seven different ways
- Outdoor cooking made simple
Which we don’t like
- Hardcore grillers may not prefer this design
2. Stack Stool and Table Combo
A collection of stools and tables that caught my attention recently was the Nardi Stack stool and Combo table. Designed by Raffaello Galiotto, the Italian furniture brand Nardi launched a collection of stools and a table with a linear design complemented by strips of wood.
Why is it significant?
Crafted from 100 percent recyclable regenerated polypropylene, the furniture collection is designed to look like traditional wooden furniture. Light and strong, the stool and table can be easily lifted, handled and transported from one place to another. And the fact that it looks like wooden furniture only adds to its list of benefits!
What we like
- It seems to be made of wood
- Take up minimal space when set aside and stored
Which we don’t like
- The aesthetics of the collection are quite dull and boring
3. The Dzome
The Dzome is a versatile garden office pod, providing you with some personal space and time when you need a break from the daily grind. It provides a moment of relaxation on a very busy day.
Why is it significant?
Anthony Hodson designed the Dzome to tackle the frustration and boredom people felt working from home during the pandemic. Although offices have slowly started to open up, a large number of people still work from home, or follow a hybrid work model – one that involves working at home, and in the office. In such a situation, it can still be difficult to maintain a work-life balance, as you tend to spend a lot of time confined to your home.
What we like
- It helps us achieve a work-life balance
- The pod is inspired by nature and the Golden Ratio of the Fibonacci sequence
Which we don’t like
- Ideal for a large backyard, but won’t work for smaller yards
4. OD Stone 8
The new OD Stone 8 from Focal’s line of Littora 200 outdoor speakers has a round, egg-like shape and textured finishes that trick your eyes into thinking they are made of stone. These speakers easily fit into almost any outdoor motif, be it a lush garden or a swimming pool with a concrete surround, covering almost all sides of the pool.
Why is it significant?
These speakers are IP55 rated, which means they will survive a rainstorm and an accidental water jet from the pool.
What we like
- Blends easily with any outdoor motif
- Like mushrooms and stones
Which we don’t like
- Anyone is likely to mistake these speakers for real mushrooms and stones if that’s what you’re looking for
5. Make.Work.Spaces
This particular micro office is quite versatile! It can be placed in your home, corporate office, or even out in public. You can add different Make.Work.Space spaces in your office, create spaces for employees to get some privacy from the chaos of the office, or to work peacefully in your backyard.
Why is it significant?
When it comes to working from home – the Make.Work.Space serves as the ideal home office! As well as serving as a home office, it could also be used as a quiet space to relax and unwind. Sometimes we need privacy in our own homes, especially if we live with family, friends or others. It’s an economical and efficient way to maximize your living space!
What we like
- It comes in three different modules to meet the different needs of different people
Which we don’t like
- The choice to use the micro office in public spaces may be difficult to implement
6. The Three
This modular furniture gives the users a lounge that they can lay back on with support, or it can be instantly transformed into a low stool for the elderly who cannot sit cross-legged on the ground. And when you want to keep your food or board game you’re carrying, the Threefold can be a sturdy table. A perfect companion for picnics and camping, the Threefold construction is supported by extenders and is safe and secure to use.
Why is it significant?
There is truly no shortage of adaptable furniture for picnics, camping, and outdoor events, but the Threefold presents its own use case, courtesy of its incredible versatility and effortless, time-saving flip. This is fundamentally true since the traditional mats we make outdoors are limited in form. The fabric mats would offer more comfort, compared to a half-wood mat like the Threefold, however, it has a limited function. If you understood, it excludes some users who cannot sit on the ground for convenience and comfort, forcing you to carry an additional folding chair. The conceptual threefold outdoor furniture here extends adaptability to everyone’s needs in one useful unit.
What we like
- It transforms into a lounger, stool, and coffee table
- Safe + robust design
Which we don’t like
- It is not very aesthetically pleasing
7. The Outlaw Bike
What if you could ride to work on a bike and disassemble it at your destination to reassemble it as an armchair to sit on in the meeting room? It is not easy for industrial designers to create a product that is disguised as a completely different idea. This is how the Outlaw Bike was born in Brazil though. We can argue, and you will read further why, that the bike is designed as an awareness campaign against the Brazilian tax regime, but in reality it is a project that will have a lot of sentiment with the idea of industrial gains.
Why is it significant?
The bike, designed by Cardoso Cycles for a collaborative awareness campaign by Talent Marcel and Bicycling Magazine, can be immediately disassembled to be assembled into an armchair and a table. The idea is to draw the attention of the Brazilian tax authorities to the tax burden affecting the sale of bicycles in the country.
What we like
- The furniture or the bicycle is made from the same parts and the same material. It’s just that they are together in a different way
Which we don’t like
- The design may seem unnecessary to share
8. Stump
Called Stump, the lighting design is a strong light designed to light up and illuminate the outdoor areas of Møn Island, although it would also look great in your backyard!
Why is it significant?
The light was specially designed to combat and reduce light pollution. With a bollard shape, the lighting design features an oxidized cast iron body and a transparent cap.
What we like
- It includes a warm-toned and low-energy lighting fixture that emits a soft and radiant light
- Its sturdy structure can be used as a stool for people to lean on
Which we don’t like
- Not the best choice, if you want a lighting design that provides more illumination
9. The Trinity
Called the Tripster, this unique portable chair from Trippy Outdoor is a handy little piece that you can stash in your garage or the back of your car and pop out when you need it!
Why is it significant?
I had to stop myself from calling the Tripster a folding chair because honestly, it doesn’t really fold. Built with a unique but incredibly simple assembly mechanism, the Tripster plugs in and out efficiently, essentially turning into a comfortable high-back outdoor chair, and two easy-to-store wooden pieces.
What we like
- It creates a seat mount that travels very well, and is a breeze to set up
- Light weight form
Which we don’t like
- It does not look very sturdy, especially for a slippery sand surface
10. The LIPOWER Mars-2000
Meet the LIPOWER Mars-2000, a beer-cooled power station that gives you up to 2000W of power no matter where you are. Whether you’re camping outdoors, spending a cool afternoon at the beach, going on a road trip, or even taking your camera and drone on a day trip for work or casual photography, the LIPOWER Mars-2000 quite portable. power source equipped with EV-grade LFP batteries for sustained power whatever your need.
Why is it significant?
The 1460Wh power station weighs 35.5 lbs (16.1 kilograms) and comes with built-in handles that allow you to load it in the back of a car and carry it pretty much anywhere you want. The LIPOWER Mars-2000 offers 10 different ports to charge/power a whole number of devices, including 3 110V AC ports, 3 12V DC ports (including one car outlet), 3 USB-A ports (with includes one USB3.0 port for fast). charging), and a single USB-C port that outputs 60W, making it perfect for phones, tablets, and even laptops.
What we like
- There is also an input for plugging solar panels into the LIPOWER Mars-2000, charging them through solar energy up to 80% in 5 hours, according to its makers, LIPOWER
Which we don’t like
- It is a rather bulky design
