Mark Wahlberg and the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards provoked outrage for intensifying what should have been a moment of celebration for Asians and Asian Americans.
On Sunday night, Wahlberg presented the award for best ensemble cast in a motion picture to the mostly Asian star of “Everything Everywhere All At Once.”
But people They were quick to criticize the guild for choosing the “Father Stu” star to present this award, considering the anti-Asian and anti-Black crimes the actor committed as a teenager.

In 1988, a 16-year-old Wahlberg hit a Vietnamese man in the head with a 5-foot wooden stick while trying to steal alcohol, knocking the man unconscious and sending him to the hospital, CBS News and USA Today reported. The same day, he punched another Vietnamese man in the face while trying to avoid the police. He used a series of racial slurs during the incident, according to NBC News.
Wahlberg was charged as an adult with attempted murder but was convicted of assault and served about 45 days in jail. He was also charged with criminal contempt for violating a previous civil rights injunction, CBS reports.
Before that, in 1986, Wahlberg and his friends chased a group of mostly Black fourth graders on a beach in Boston, threw rocks at them and called them the N-word. Wahlberg and his friends received a civil rights injunction as a warning – meaning that if they committed another hate crime, they would go to prison. Wahlberg’s attack on the Asian duo later surpassed this.
Wahlberg and the Screen Actors Guild did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but people on Twitter did not hold back.
mark wahlberg (who committed numerous hate crimes including against asian people) it’s a shame for hollywood to give an ensemble sag award to a mostly asian cast
I have to say, after Mark Wahlberg, who literally went to prison as a teenager for committing a hate crime against a Vietnamese man, presenting an award to the cast of Everything Everywhere All At Once was definitely a choice.
A friendly reminder that Mark Wahlberg violently assaulted two Vietnamese men and I think it’s pretty cool that he’s the one who announced Everything Everywhere All At Once as the SAG award winner tonight.
It is very interesting that Will Smith was not invited to present the best actor and Mark Wahlberg was presenting the ensemble award for a film with a mostly Asian cast when he hit and almost blinded a Vietnamese man.
I guess if Mark Wahlberg (or his management) wanted his racist sectarian past gone and presenting the SAG award to EEEAAO wouldn’t be on the list of gigs to do.
No, I’m so fucking mad that a man who brutally attacked two Asian Americans and called them slant eyed g**ks got to announce this award, a historic win for Asian Americans, the SAG Awards, which you offended Mark Wahlberg.
mark wahlberg the hate crime giving their sag award to the cast of eeaao and they had to stand there during their speech talking about racism towards asians in hollywood
In 2014, Wahlberg sought a pardon from Massachusetts state officials for his conviction in 1988 but dropped the application in 2016. That year, he told The Wrap that he regretted the pardon request.
“It was one of those things where it was presented to me, and if I could do it over again I wouldn’t have focused on that or I wouldn’t have bothered with it,” Wahlberg said, claiming that “28 years spent righting the wrongs. .”
“I didn’t need a piece of paper to acknowledge it,” he said. “I was forced to do it, I certainly didn’t need or want to relive that stuff again”
He also told the Guardian in 2020 that he had “done the work” to distance himself from his past.
“I took it upon myself to keep my mistakes safe and face the hate and not be part of the gang anymore — to say I was going to go and do my own thing. Which made it 10 times more difficult to walk from my house to the train station, go to school, go to work,” he said.
But some Twitter users argued that the Asian community deserved better.
“of all people why did they have MARK WAHLBERG,” one person tweeted. “You could have chosen anyone else.”
