Snyder has reportedly threatened to sue the NFL and its owners if his bailout request is not granted, leading to talks of voting him out of ownership, according to the anonymous source who spoke to The Washington Post. Those sources labeled his claims “ridiculous” and “absurd”. If Snyder refuses to sell, the NFL’s other owners would “definitely” move closer to voting Snyder out of ownership, which three-quarters of the league’s owners would have to do.
In addition to seeking to absolve himself of any legal or financial issues arising from his ownership, Snyder is also asking the NFL to keep the results of the ongoing investigation into him and the team’s work environment confidential. This request contradicts the NFL’s public statement that the results of attorney Mary Jo White’s investigation will be published. According to Washington Post sources, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, one of the NFL’s most influential owners, is trying to negotiate a peace deal in which Snyder would sell the Chiefs and leave the league without any further issues. Jones stood up for Snyder during past controversies.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was reportedly upset with Snyder’s recovery claim, according to The Washington Post. The league and the owners are willing to go to court with Snyder if necessary, according to their source, but they want Jones to convince Snyder to accept an outstanding sale of his team and leave the NFL without a legal battle. Owners say they think any vote they could take to remove Snyder would stand up in court, according to the Post’s source.
A vote to remove an owner has never taken place. Former Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson sold the franchise to David Tepper in 2018 following an NFL investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct. Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris is interested in buying the Washington Commanders along with Bezos and Fertitta. The Chiefs, the Dallas Cowboys, and the NFL declined to comment on The Washington Post’s reporting on Monday.
