Microsoft has deployed a new version of its Bing chatbot (v96) with improvements to make the AI smarter in a few key areas – and a big change has been hinted at as well.
Mikhail Parakhin, who heads the Advertising and Web Services division at Microsoft, shared this information on Twitter (via MS Power User (opens in a new tab)).
Okay, it took longer than we originally expected, but finally Bing Chat v96 is fully in production. Try it! Now, to fully launch the triple toggle…February 28, 2023
So what’s new with v96? Parakhin explains that Bing users powered by ChatGPT will see a ‘significant’ reduction in the number of times the AI refuses to answer a question.
Apparently, there will also be a “reduction in hallucinations in responses”, which in industry lingo means that the chatbot will make fewer mistakes and inaccuracies when responding to users. In short, we should see less misinformation being given by the chatbot, and there have been some worrying cases of that happening recently.
The other big news delivered by Parakhin is that the so-called triple toggle, more formally known as the Bing Chat Mode selector – which has three settings to switch between the different personalities of the AI Bing – is to go live in the first a few more. days” we are tell (opens in a new tab).
Analysis: Long and winding road ahead
The ability to switch between three personalities is the big change for Bing’s chatbot, and it’s exciting for those who have interacted with the AI so far to hear that it’s about to happen.
As previously stated, the three available personalities are labeled as Precise, Balanced and Creative. The latter will provide a conversational experience, with Precise offering a shorter and more typical ‘search result’ delivery, and Balanced as a middle ground between the two. So, if you don’t like how the AI is responding to you, at least there will be options to change its behavior.
Various versions of the Chat Mode selector have been tested, as you can imagine, and the final model has just been chosen. This is now being teased ahead of release and should happen later this week as mentioned, but we’re expecting a lot of tweaking to be done after release.
Certainly if the whole Bing AI experience was anything to go by, because the whole project is, of course, still in its early stages, and Microsoft is chopping and changing things – sometimes in huge ways – it’s like without much attention.
The current tuning for v96 will help ensure that Bing doesn’t get confused and simply unresponsive to make the AI a more pleasant virtual entity to interact with, and hopefully the same will be true for the ability of personalities to change.
At the very least, the Creative personality should inject some much-needed character back into the chatbot, which is what many people want – because if the AI behaves like a search engine enough, it’s the project seems a bit dry and in danger. of being considered meaningless. After all, the whole point of this initiative is to make Bing something different than just a traditional search experience.
It will undoubtedly be a long road of tweaking for the Bing AI, and the next step after the personalities go live will likely be to raise that chat limit (imposed shortly after launch) to something somewhat higher to allow more. long conversations. If the full color gradients didn’t happen first, they’re the ones that got the chatbot into hot water because of the weird things it produced…
