After the suspicious death of his former housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield; the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul; and the tragic death of Paul’s friend Mallory Beach during a boating accident, Alex Murdaugh has been in prison since October 2021. With Alex currently on trial for the murders of Paul and Maggie, it is an appropriate time to revisit the horrific story. This is exactly what Netflix has done with it The Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal. The three-part docuseries reveals shocking revelations about the situation and the traumatic events leading up to and contributing to the family’s downfall.
The history of the covers around Paul Murdaugh
It’s no secret that the Murdaughs; Prominence in South Carolina meant that they got away with a lot more than many believe they should have. But what Alex Murdaugh and his father, Randolph, went through is protecting the rebellious and troubled Paul. Based on various accounts given by Paul Murdaugh’s former friends, including his ex-girlfriend, Morgan Doughty, it appears that Paul did whatever he wanted without consequences.
Specifically, he drank excessively, allegedly to deal with the pain of the family’s “black bear”. He felt, according to his friends, that his mother favored his brother, Buster, over him since Buster was following in the footsteps of his ancestors, getting a good education and going to work in the field of law.
In one disturbing instance, Doughty recalls that after a night of drinking, Paul insisted on driving his own truck home. He crashed into a ditch, and before Doughty could dial 911, he stopped her and called his grandfather instead. Patriarch Murdaugh showed up with Alex and Paul’s mother, Maggie, after which the trio cleared the car of the many guns and empty beer cans inside. Nothing came of the accident, presumably with the events being concealed or covered up by law enforcement, in association with the Murdaughs. What shocked me the most, however, was when Doughty recalled that the family seemed more concerned about any damning evidence that might tarnish their reputation than checking to make sure that the kids are fine.
Cold Randolph Murdaugh
In the events that followed the boating accident that led to Beach’s death, the other parents at the scene were understandably distraught. When one mother commented to Randolph Murdaugh about the seriousness of the situation and the importance of finding out what happened to Beach, she was taken aback by his cold response.
“I’m pretty sure we know how that will end up,” he replied emotionlessly to her inquiry. She would then see that he was more concerned about protecting his grandson than he was about the young woman who died in the accident. He apparently had no interest in finding Beach’s body, and showed no remorse for what had happened to her. This mother and others suggested that it would be in the best interest of the Murdaughs not to find Beach’s body because that would eliminate the possibility of murder charges.
Conversation missing in trapeze
In the docuseries, it is noted that a very strange Anthony Cook told police when they first arrived on the scene that “Paul Murdaugh killed my girlfriend.” But this statement was omitted entirely from any transcripts brought into evidence after the proceedings.
Police officer Michael Brock, noted in a title card as still working for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), was reportedly the officer assigned to cover the first 24 hours of the incident. Meanwhile, the other officer, Michael Paul Thomas, is said to have been close friends with Alex Murdaugh’s brother, John Marvin Murdaugh. Doughty clearly referred to him as “Alex Murdaugh’s vessel”.
Engineer’s analysis of the accident
An engineer who analyzed what happened to the boat and the injuries to each of the teenagers on board, hired by the attorney for the Beach, Mark Tinsley, confirmed that Connor Cook, who Paul claimed was driving the boat, could not boats, to be logical. was in that condition.
Based on his injuries and Paul’s, the engineer determined that it would not have been possible for Connor to be steering the boat at the time of impact. However, the family initially claimed that was the case, allegedly to save their son from getting into legal trouble over the accident and Beach’s death.
There is proof that Alex was at the scene of Paul and Maggie’s murders
The most shocking revelation from the docuseries, which is central to the case in court at the moment, concerns Alex’s long claim that he was out visiting his sick parents during the murders of Paul and Maggie. New evidence, however, shows that he really did exist at the time. His voice can be heard in a video that was filmed by the dog kennels where the bodies of Maggie and Paul were found. In the ongoing trial, Alex now admits that he lied about this, blaming paranoia from his drug use and addiction as the reason he lied about this crucial piece of information. The sight and sound of Alex’s voice have become crucial to the murder trial against him. Based on the timing, it would place Alex on the scene just moments before the death of the two family members. However, Alex maintains his innocence and says he did not kill his wife or son. Alex Murdaugh’s trial continues and is being streamed by several outlets.
